Only a memory can suffice

Two steps from the ivory stones
Longer and farther than before,
Yet so familiar with the breeze:
What is written on ancient stones.

Even with slate and ice I will never fall
Yet I saw you take so much caution
To the sanded and salted path, slowly,
Making your way to where I am now.

A candle is lit and no one is around
It's been a long time, yet longer I will go.
If I turn around will I see you
Turn from a face to a cloud?

Only a memory can suffice to remain
By your side if for but a glimpse again.
